Description
What is HOPES?
The Health Outreach Partnership of EVMS Students, or HOPES, is a student-run free clinic that provides medical care to the uninsured population in Hampton Roads. Since its inception in 2011, HOPES Free Clinic has grown from a phone triage service to a free clinic offering the following specialty services in both English and Spanish:
- Primary Care
- Ophthalmology
- Dermatology
- Gynecology
- Orthopedics
- Physical Therapy
- Mental Health
Though our students are responsible for scheduling, staffing, and running the clinic each week, HOPES relies on dedicated, community-focused physician volunteers to facilitate learning opportunities for students and provide patient care.
Your Role
As a Volunteer Physician at the EVMS HOPES Free Clinic, you will mentor students on clinical skills and patient care. In addition to your role as a mentor, you will also provide medical care to the uninsured.
Time Commitment
Each clinic session is 3-4 hours on Thursdays and select Wednesdays. We recommend volunteering at least 52 hours per year, but you are welcome to schedule your volunteer shifts to your preference.
Perks
After successfully completing 52 hours and one year of volunteering at HOPES, you are eligible to request appointment as Community Faculty. With this appointment comes free access to Up-To-Date and other Library Resources, such as EndNote.
Malpractice Insurance Coverage
Any student, resident, or faculty, both EVMS and non-EVMS, who volunteer at HOPES will be covered by EVMS malpractice insurance.
